    Weight loss surgery- An Overview

    The bariatric surgery for weight loss is done on patients with a BMI index of greater than 40. They are also done in case of diabetic patients and patients with cardiovascular diseases with a BMI of 35 to 40. Weight loss surgery is carried out only in the extreme cases when exercises or medicines fail to have an effect on reducing the weight. In cases on men, an excess weight of 100 pounds and an excess of 80 pounds in women is considered obesity.

    Weight loss surgery refers to a medical procedure that reduces the weight by making corresponding changes in the small intestine and stomach. There is mainly the restrictive surgery, which reduces the size of the stomach by dividing the stomach or removing a portion of it. This reduces the food input. The malabsorptive surgery refers to operating on the small intestine. It controls the food and helps in reducing the weight that way.

    BMI or Body Mass Index :

    BMI refers to a person’s body weight to height relation. A person with a given height can have a maximum body weight above which he becomes overweight. And, whether the person is overweight or not, depends on a person’s BMI. A BMI of above 25 is considered overweight and above 30 is taken as obesity. These conditions affect the person’s health and have risk factors like diabetes, \stroke, heart diseases and cholesterol.

    The Types of Weight Loss Surgery :

    ==> Gastric Bypass: It helps reduce the weight by reducing the amount of food a person eats and also by reducing the amount of calories and fats absorbed from food. The process includes reducing the stomach capacity by using a bypass in stomach. The person will feel that the stomach is full with a small amount of food. It helps in reducing the amount of food taken. The food easily reaches the lower intestine because of a bypass in stomach and it leads to absorption of lesser calories and fats. It is effective as it reduces the overall weight by 50 to 70 percent. The effect is slow, but steady. It effectively reduces back pain, depression and diabetes. The result of less absorption of nutrients and proteins is malnutrition and ulcers, bleeding and so on are found. Lower nutrition results in lower bone density because of lesser calcium and other nutrients absorption.

    ==> Gastric Sleeve: It is considered safer than gastric bypass because of no risk of malnutrition and lesser risks during the surgery. The stomach is reduced in size and it keeps the hunger in control. It has lesser effective rate. The success rate, even though is less than gastric bypass, for safe reasons gastric sleeve is considered.

    ==> Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding: The stomach opening is reduced using a band. This band is adjustable according to the amount of food to be controlled. Lap banding is simple, but the risk of a foreign particle inside the body has its own consequences. Any failure in the band results the person going back to the former self. It doesn’t include any cutting of stomach or intestine and is safe and reversible. The problem with lap banding is that it is slow and the presence of foreign particle calls for frequent follow-ups with your doctor.

    Influence of Weight Loss Surgery :

    Obesity and overweight can cause a lot of bad health problems like cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure. Weight loss surgery helps you become normal and look better. The important factor is that you look like a normal person without any extra weight. Overweight can cause knee problems and with reduced weight that problem ceases to exist. Looking normal brings a positive change to our lifestyle. Recovering from operation is difficult and takes a lot of patience and requires the help of a doctor to help you through it. The reduction of weight isn’t a fast process, as it takes years to get to the normal weight. The doctor’s diet instructions need to be carried out for full effect. It also reduces the risks of medical problems like cholesterol, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases and so on.

    Steps To Follow After a Weight Loss Surgery :

    ==> Do follow ups with your surgeon and make sure he knows if you have any difficulty after undergoing the surgery.

    ==> Eat only when you feel hungry and make sure you take small amounts. The surgery was carried out to reduce the weight and the food intake. So don’t work against the surgery.

    ==> A lot of people are undergoing the surgery and you can find and discuss with them your problems and receive their help through your weight loss process.

    ==> Taking medicines and other drugs need to be consulted with your doctor and made sure it is safe for your body and will not affect your body in any negative ways.

    ==> Protein rich food needs to be taken instead of junk foods. It helps you keep your muscles strong.

    ==> A drink to avoid is the carbonated drinks as it can affect the stomach and also avoid snacks as its unhealthy.

    ==> Another drink to avoid is caffeine, as it increases your heart rate and also results in stomach ulcer. So, it is absolutely necessary to avoid caffeine completely.

    ==> The main important thing is exercise. Do it frequently and it will make sure that you stay healthy and fit always.

    The modern studies in medical science have helped people in even getting rid of obesity. Being obese with extra pounds of fat in their body will make a person look unattractive. For a healthy and long-lasting life, it is always good to maintain a body that is fit and strong. Obesity not only causes because of uncontrolled diet. There are many cases in which the aftermaths of some medicines consumed for a long-term causes change in the human hormones resulting in obesity. Hereditary should also be considered for a person being obese. But such chances are less. Medical science has done their part in controlling obesity and now it is your call after such treatments to remain healthy and strong.
