When it comes to scar tissue, many people want nothing to do with it. One of the first thoughts other than first aid when becoming injured is what kind of scar a scrape or laceration will leave. Depending on where the injury is, a scar may be more or less of a big deal. Facial scars are often the most dreaded, since they can cause a person’s entire image to be affected.
Scar tissue is caused by a buildup of fibrous cells after a wound which leaves an opening on the skin. This is the body’s natural defense mechanism against bacteria invading the wound site. Scars also prevent excessive blood loss from that site along with clotting agents within the blood itself. Though a scar will often heal for the most part, remnants of it may remain visible on the skin for a long time. Sometimes, a scar will even remain for life. This is because the fibrous cells which originally replaced the skin at the time of the injury will often remain in place and keep replenishing themselves, instead of normal skin cells replacing them.

Symptoms of scar tissue are not difficult to notice in most cases. These are often evident by either a pink or slightly darker than flesh color area where a wound occurred. The scar tissue will be the same pattern that the wound had, since this is where the fibrous cells landed in order to form a barrier against bacteria. Though a scar may fade somewhat over time, there is almost always some sort of remnant of scarring left behind.
People who have unsightly scars and want to get them fixed will often consult a plastic surgeon. This is something not everyone wants to do, since most health insurance policies do not cover plastic surgery procedures. Those who do opt for the plastic surgery option can often find that scar repair is able to provide them with a way to eliminate their scars completely.
Not all scars can be repaired with plastic surgery. Depending on the size and shape of a scar, a plastic surgeon might not be able to use surgical techniques to completely eliminate all traces of the scar. They might be able to reduce the size of the scarred site, however.
People who cannot afford plastic surgery may utilize makeup products which are designed to hide scars temporarily. These products are available in most makeup aisles, and they often come as creams. Different flesh tone colors of the makeup are available to effectively hide scars. One of the main disadvantages of these products is that they are easily removed, so a person cannot typically go swimming with such a product without it washing off and the scar becoming visible. Such makeup is, however, good for formal occasions when people simply want to hide their scar for a few hours. Larger scars may not be adequately hidden by such makeup, since makeup is much more visible when it is caked on in huge amounts.
