Major Fifth Disease Symptoms

As mentioned earlier, there are many symptoms for the disease.  Here are some of the major symptoms of the illness as follows.

• Fever
• Nasal congestion and drainage
• Fatigue
• Sore throat
• Aching muscles
• Headache

Rash Characteristics

• The facial rash will usually last for 7 to 10 days
• It is bright red and usually will fade in four days
• Rash may spread on the arms as well as the lower extremities and trunk.
• It has a lace-like pattern and will eventually clear completely.

Fifth Disease In Adults

It can also occur in adults as well as pregnant women.  Fortunately, it will go away without any treatment.  Here are some additional symptoms that can occur in adults.

• Swollen glands
• Red eyes
• Bruise-like rashes
• Sore throat

In pregnant women, the disease can be transmitted through blood.  It can affect the baby through the placenta.  However, there is a higher likelihood that the mother is already immune to the virus.  Specifically, there is up a 50% chance of this happening.  Therefore it is not very likely for babies to contract the disease.

If and when the mother contracts with the disease, there is still a very high chance that the baby will be fine.  There is a one is to three ratio of infection when it comes to pregnant women and their babies.  Even then, the baby turns out fine after birth.
